Shift in power at RIM. Too little too late?

Unless you have been away from any form of media coverage, you would know that Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have stepped down from their role as co-ceo of Research in Motion. This decision was six months in the making or from some perspectives, conveniently after Apple announced the original iphone! The board of directors unanimously named former chief operating officer,Thorsten , as president and CEO on the word of Balsillie and Lazaridis. I find this concerning when RIM is in a period of growth where thinking outside of the box is crucial in the success and even survival of the Canadian smart phone manufacturer. This would have been a great opportunity to bring in someone new to the industry but decisions have been made and its time to sit back and see what happens. What RIM needs, is someone who would be willing to stand in the face of complacency and not back down. Instead they have placed someone in the role who has been around when all the poor decisions were made and undoubtedly is emotionally invested. Too bad Sergio Marchionne already has a job! Maybe they could clone him? RIM needs someone like Sergio or Serg as I like to call him. Serg is willing to take any idea as long as its a good one and let the Brain child run with it. The only thing is, is that it better be successful or he’ll pull you and put someone else in charge of the idea. Reflecting on the challenges that RIM has had, RIM needs this type of thinking and decision making fast!
